We love Tuesdays. We get to listen to new music all day and bring your our favorites, which we hope makes you love Wednesdays. Check out our picks for this week!
”Future People” - Alabama Shakes
The coronation of Brittany Howard continues. Her guitar’s precision is perfectly juxtaposed by her slurred vocals. We’ve been buzzing about Sound & Color for months and we’re less than a month away!
”How Can I” - Laura Marling
I caught a Joni Mitchell vibe after listening to this “How Can I”. The similarities are endless, from the cover art to the acoustic chord changes to lyrics that hit you right in the feels:
Could have been you and should have been anyone
Now I've missed my chance to run
And I would have gone anywhere with you.
I would have gone if you'd asked me to
How can I live without you?
Maybe it’s because Joni is my mom’s favorite musician, but I really love this song. Love you too, Mama!
”Hold My Hand” - Jess Glynne
Can Jess Glynne pull a Sam Smith? Much like Smith’s career took flight after his spot on Disclosure’s “Latch”, Jess Glynne earned her shot at stardom with her excellent work on Clean Bandit’s "Rather Be". “Hold My Hand” isn’t a ballad by any means, but hot damn, hear those pipes in the chorus!
”Only In America (feat. Party Supplies)” - Action Bronson
Our guy Squints did wonders in his review of Bronsoliño’s Mr. Wonderful, but this pick is more than just a shameless plug: this is proof that Action can rap over ANYTHING. This time he raps over an 80’s rock beat courtesy of Party Supplies, dropping classic one-liner after classic one liner.
BIG BEARDED BUDDHA BANGING BITCHES IN BERMUDA/BARRY BONDS, BARRACUDA, CHATTANOOGA/ BACK ALLEY SHOOTER, BLACK BALLEY BOOTER

The No-Brainer Porter/Darren Co-Pick Of The Week: “Aqua Profonda!” - Courtney Barnett
dkataja: First off, major shouts to my dad for tipping me off that this album was going to be fire
dkataja: He showed me her Tiny Desk Concert, and her surefire future success was plainly evident then
importer: good looks, MC TWB
dkataja: So, this song, "Aqua Profonda!"
importer: Sometimes I Sit and Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit excels in stories in small spaces
importer: what a better space for a song's plot than a swimming pool????
dkataja: "I saw you in the lane next to me" is the opener. As a former swimmer, this hooked me immediately
importer: Funny you say that, Darren. I also happen to be a former swimmer!
dkataja: "I much prefer swimming to jogging" made me fall in love with Courtney Barnett forever
importer: And no love is quite like swim team love
importer: This song may only be two minutes long, but it's hilarious
dkataja: Who can't relate to trying to impress someone by doing something you're actually not all that good at?
importer: Homegirl passes out from trying to hold her breath after doing a flip turn
importer: I giggled so hard to this song
dkataja: It's funny for sure, but the end just stings, man
dkataja: "When I came to, you and your towel were gone." Like, damn! That sucks!
importer: And now she sitting there in her chlorine-filled hair and sadness
importer: and prolly her unshaved legs. maybe not seeing as how she's not that good at swimming
dkataja: (For the unfamiliar: competitive female swimmers don't shave their legs for months at a time so as to train with additional drag)
dkataja: (The flipside: dudes eventually have to shave everything)
importer: (In other words: swimming is a weird sport)
dkataja: And Courtney Barnett is a weird Australian singer, and I love her forever.
importer: Even if this song wasn't on New Music Tuesday (do better, Spotify), "Aqua Profonda!" is The No-Brainer Porter/Darren Co-Pick Of The Week!
